CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN.

Sir,—Anything moro unfair than the criticism (reproduced in Wednesday's Dominion) to which Captain Amundsen has been subjected by "Civis" of tho "Otago Witness" it would bo hard, to imagine. Did Amundsen, let mo ask, steal away quietly to tho Antarctic and attempt to reach the Polo by the route he know Captain Scott would talccP No, sir! Ho apprised Scott by cablegram that he was "coming south," and on reaching the Antarctic shaped a course for tho Pole far distant from the Scott route. Amundsen reached the Pole first becauso ho had tho better luck. Ho took what proved to be the easier route; ho had lino weather; and last, but not least,'lie had splendid dog teams. Scott, on tho other'hand, was delayed a month owing to tho loss of several ponies; ho experienced the worst of weather, and lie was without the services of dogs for sledging. There is absolutely nothing in tlio contention that scientific work delayed the journey to tho Pole.

It was on the return journey that Scott and his party halted time and again, to investigate in the interests of science. Captain Amundsen did nothing in any way dishonourable, and had gallant Captain Scott 1 ived he \yould have been one of the first to have taken the hand of the intrepid Norwegian explorer—l am, etc., FAIR PLAY.
