CARNIVAL ESSAY.

1 ON WELLINGTON'S BEAUTIES. THE AWARDS. Tho awards in the prize essay competition held in connection with tho Clitizons' Carnival were declared yesterday by the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren), who, in turn, had just received tho decision of tho judge (Sir. \V. Fj Ward). The prizes were , given by Dr; A. K. Newman, M.P. Tho smn donated wus £10, and tWs was divided into threo prizes of «£5, £3, and t C2. The subject Dr. Newman had specified wal "Tho Natural Beauties of Wellington City and Harbour." Twenty-seven essays wcro submitted. Following are tho awards :— Mrs. W. C. Chalfield ("Cassandra"), Island Bay, ,£5, 1. Mr. Richard Brown ("Poneko"), Willis Street, .£3, 2. Miss Kathleen Grant ("Victoria"), No. 90, Majoribanks Street, .£2, B.' In making his award, tho judge made the following remarks:— "Tho task of selection has not been a very easy one, as thero were no essays sent of very outstanding merit, even tho best essays being marred by faults of stylo and in some cases of spelling. Some of the essays dealt with the subject semihuinorously, wliich, in my opinion, put them entirely out of consideration j others indulged too much in "fine writing," while others, tho matters of which was good, wero spoilt by a loose and rambling 6tyle. After full consideration, I placo the winners as follow:— 1. Cassandra. 2. Poneke. 3. Victoria. The last-named adds to tho signature "aged 13 years 9 months," and "tho essay is a very fine effort for a cliild of that age." The prize essay appears in our Woman's l'age.
