A BALLOT AT TAIHIPE,

At a ballot conducted by the Wellington Land Board at Taihape on Tuesday last five sections in the Ngamatea survey district were leased on the optional tenure. Two sections in the Karioi survey district were also offered, but only one of them was taken up. The. Karioi sections we're offered on renawablo lease. All the sections were of bush land. There were 245 applicants at the'ballot, but a number were rejected as being for various reasons, disqualified. Under the provisions,of the Land Laws Amendment Act of last year, preference was given to married men with families, and to those who had been unsuccessful applicants: at two previous land ballots, 'lhe sections wero disposed/of as follows:— Section 3, Block VIII, Ngamatea Survey District, 345 acres (18 approved applicants)— Mr. A. S. Merson. Section G, Block VIII, Ngamatea' Survey District, 486 acre!? (10 approved applicants)— Mr. Timothy G. M'Gwinn. Section 7, Block VIII, Ngamatea Survey District, 345 acres (12 approved applicants)— Mr. David Allan. Section 8, Block VIII, Ngamatea Survey District, 374 acres (10 approved applicants)—ilr. David M'Cormick. Section' 9, Block VIII, Ngamatea Survey District, 4GG acres (5 approved applicants)— Mr. A. B. O'Connor. Section 5, Block: XIV, , Karioi Survey District, 270 acres (7 approved applicants) —Mr. John Hugh Craven. For Section 1, Block XV, Karioi Survey District, 403 acres, there was only one applicant, and he was rejected as not being landless. The section was again thrown open, and applications closed at 4 p.m. yesterday.' Another ballot will be held within the next day or two. On March 28 next there will bo a ballot at tlio Wellington District Lands '.Office for four sections of land in the Piripiri Block, near Ilunterville. About the middle of next month three sections in tho Waipapa Block (Upper Wanganui district] will be- ballotted for, probably at Ohakmie. i -
