(Prom Out Special Correspondents;) ' '■'.-. .- -4 . ..• CARTERTON. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Ugg Circle "was held at Masterton .on Tuursday evening, Mr. H. H. Armstrong presiding. The election of officers resulted :—Committee, Messrs. H. H. Armstrong, W. H. Baillie (Carterton), ■E, • W. Tato (Greytown)/ J, Sellars and Fellingham (Masterton); secretary and treasurer, Mr. H.vM. Boddington; auditor, Mr./ R. 0. Jarrett. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring officers, and to Messrs. A. J. Johnston and Co. (Masterton), W. Tucker (Carterton), M. Marton and Co. (Greytown), G. F. Lobnstedt (Mauriceville), and P. Holberg (Mangdmahoc) for attention to agencies. Mr. W. Jessen, of Wellington, addressed the meeting on the necessity for paying particular attention to the eggs sent, and Mr. Cooper, of Lower Hutt, briefly explaincd : the business of a new company which is being floated.'A meeting of the oonlmittee of the local branch of tho Wairarapa Caledonian So-ciety-was held on Thursday night, Mr. T. S. Arcus presiding. A programme was submitted,' which, after considerable discussion, was approved'with oue or two slight alterations. There will be some eighteen or nineteen athletic events and a dozen Highland items, dancing,, piping, etc. Besides these, there will be races for .children all day. Liberal prizes were alUottcd, and the Masterton Society promised all assistance in its power. The sports will be held oh tho showgrounds, Carterton, on Thursday, April 10, and in the evening a grand Scotch concert will be held. ; . '' , ' FEILDING. Lysnaiv a resolution-was carried in favour of trading direct with Bristol and tho "West Coast ports of England, instead of through London. • When it became known that ,the defence authorities were having some difficulty in regard to a rifle rnngo for tho Feilding area, a very generous offer.wag made by, Mr: 0. M'Elroy. of Halcombe Road. Mr. M'Elroy offered supply tho site for the range, and to givo all the timber required for tho building of tho trenches. ; The authorities accepted the offer, a'nd the- work' of construction has already commenced. ■ Captain' Robinson was in Feilding on Saturday in connection with the now range.'; It will be used by the Territorials, Senior Cadets, and.the ,rifle clubs of the Feilding area. GREYTOWN. ■ Tho i usual meeting of the District High . School' Committee was held on Friday evening last. The 'headmaster's report showed an attendance, at primary school of 235, 'and of 34 at the secondary school. Owing to v .the late fire the urgency for a, new school is now self-evident, and it is hoped the board will >be'able to put up a school for the secondary classes. In tho meantime the Sundiy School of St. Luke's Church is being utilised. Mr. J. A. Lutz (as representing . the lanz Cream Separator Company) has presented the school with a separator. This will be found valuable in the asricultural classes, and a hearty vote of thanks has been accorded the firm. In future a dux medal (for boys and girls) will be given to pupils of .Standard VI in the school. OTAKI. _ A meeting to form n branch of the Sports Protection League was held in Levin.on Friday evening, the Mnyor presiding. ■ There was a large attendance. Mr. Paape, organising secretary, delivered an address. The following were elected officers:—Patron, Mr.' .B. R, Gardener; president, Mr. J. R. M'Donaldj vice-pre-sidents, Messrs. F.. S. Lancaster, J. Ryder; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R, LV Wallace. • .> . i A negro youth, an absconder from the Woreroa Training Farm, appeared before Mr. Poynter, S.M., hi Palmerston, charg-' ed with stealing both money and goods, the property of Mrs. M'Clure. The maglstrate ordered the lad to be sent back to Wereroa, whence he will bo transferred to Burnham. Tho Rev. R. B. Speirs will return to Auckland, to complete theological studies, after v next Sunday. In the interim between his departuro and the Rev. Cottom's taking charge of tho circuit—about tho third week in April—Mr. Costian will carry on the Methodist work in Otaki and district. Mr. Costian is a missionary, studeut, a recent arrival from Home.
