(By Telegraph.—Proii Aseooiatlon.) « FIRES. Dunedln, February 14. A five-roonied houso iu Normanby Street, Musselburgh, owned and occupied by Mr. John Bradley, was destroyed by fire this morning. The furniture (which was nil burnt) was insured with tliO'National Wlico for'£3oo, and the houso for .£6OO in !he Liverpool and Loudon and Globo office. Groymouth, February 14. This afternoon an eight-roomed cottage, attached to tho Empiro Hotel at Moann, was burned to tho ground. Tho' oottagc was occupied by a party of tourists. The origin of tho flro is unknown. Tlio .cottago is insured for JCSOO in the Hoyal Exchange, and was owned by Mr. E. l'enhallurisch. RAIN. Timaru, February 14. A considerable amount of rainjn heavy showers fell to-day, soaking the sheaves scattered by yesterday's gale. BICYCLE STEALING. Auckland, February 14. A boy, 17 years of age, named John Qunn, alias Watson, pleaded guilty to six charges of bicycle stealing to-day. Ho was also cbarged with breaking and entering. Accused when arrested was perfectly frank and admitted all the charges. He was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentence. THE GALE. _, Gore, February 14. There was unusually wintry weather yesterday and to-day, accompanied by terrifio squalls and heavy showers. Tho hills Burrounding tho town were capped frith snow,this morning. Daraago was doue to local orchards, and in sorao cases the trees wore completely stripped. Grain in stook and ready for cutting will probablv suffer sevcraly, A brick wall at Whiterig Dairy Factory' was stove 1 in, and nearly collapsed. Tie Racing Club's recently-erected grandstand suffered, 12 sheets of roofing iron being torn, off nnd blown a considerable distance. •" WORKERS''COTTAGES & FAIR RENT. nn. rr ~,. Hamilton, February H. Fhf> Hamilton Borough Council Inst evening considered a motion and decided to go into tho question of setting asido an area of borough) endowments with tho Ultimate .purpose of erecting municipal cottages. The Mayor remarked that the high rents in Hamilton were scandalous, nnd. tho borough ccrtninly should take steps towards tho erection of oottnges for working men at reasonable rentals. It might be possible a little later to obtain Government assistance in tho matter.
