COAL LANDS LEASES.
THE SURFACE AREA-NOTHING . MORE. Reverting, during a conversation with a representative of The Dominion last evening, to tho question of the Southland coal land leases, and particularly to Mr. Brighton's contention as to his titles, the Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) said: "Mr. Brighton is entitled to the fee simple of tho surface area. That is tho land in the lease, on which the annual payment is computed. He is welcome to that, and no more. Whatever other Governments may have done, I. hjivo no intention of parting with anything that should bo reserved to tho.interests of the State," concluded the Primo Minister with emphasis. .
