HOLY WEEK.
AND THE CITIZENS' CARNIVAL.
A deputation, consisting of tlio Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott), Archdeacon Harper (St. Peter's), the ltev. A. Johnston (St. Paul's), and Mr. E. H. Anderson, waited 011 tho Mayor; (Mr.'- D, M'Laren) yesterday afternoon; in connection with tho Easter Carnival, pointing out that certain events as programmed would conflict with tho proper ofceivauco of Holy Week. 1 Tho Uisliop said that they desired yery much that all citizens should co-operatx> in making tho carnival a Success, but to havo any portion of ,1110 carnival carried out on days or evenings 011 or immediately bofore Good Friday Would oifond tho consciences of many citizens belonging to tho Anglican Church; and as the carnival was a citizens' affair, ho expressed tho hopo that Some amendment could bo made in tho programme, whereby such events oould bo carried out at a later period, No objection was taken to setting asido time on the Tuesday and Wndna)d«y ; (before Good Friday) for tho inspection of industries rind publio works, ws thoy recognised that they would merely be visits paid in the day time. Thoy also recognised that the oominittee could not in auy way prescribe what should be done in. oonneofion with St. Patrick's Day (the Monday ;■ before Good Friday), as that was a matter entirely ,in tho hands of : the Roman Catholic citizens of Wellington, and was not uiidcr tho control of the council. -
Archdeacon, Harper expressed the view that tlio whole position could bo met if •it was mft(}e perfectly clear that the carnival proceedings proper would only commence on Easter Saturday, as Holy Week endeil on Good Friday night, His Worship thanked the deputation, and undertook to lay its representations fully before the meeting of the Gcnoval Executive Committee of the Carnival to bo held on Monday evening; next, and gave the assurance that they (the Carnival Cqmmitteo) had no desire to offend the' consciences of any section of. the 1, community in making the nrranjcenients, hut what had weighed largely with them was that a largo number of people could only get freo from their businesses or employment on cortain days, and they had considered them in fitting events in ivith tho holidays. With respect to the boxing tournament (to bo held on Thursday beforo Good Friday) it might be. possible to ar-, range to put it oft until the. following week: If o.ny adjustment could bo made ho felt sure that tho'General Committee would do its utmost to meet tlio wishes of tho deputation. Ho fltrongly dfsired to sea nil sections, of tho community co-oper-ating in carrying the carnival to a successful iisuc, and would, therefore,, answer that the viows of the deputation would receive full consideration.
