PASSING OF ENTRIES.
At yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of' Commerce a letter was received from tho Secretary, of Customs (Mr. W. li. Montgomery) stating that the Minister for Customs had decided that,' provided no change .of tariff is in immediate, prospect, collectors may at their discretion permit entries to be passed for goods at any time within seven days of the date of tiio expected arrival'of tho ship bringing tho same. This concession lias been iiiado at tho suggestion of tho chamber.
Mr. F. W. Manton had pointed out somo months ago that now vessels were reported by- wireless three or four days before they arrived, it would greatly expedito business if the Customs Department would pass entries on the rccoipt of bucli information instead of waiting until the vessol arrived in port, as has boon the rule. Mr. Manton was thanked by tlio president (Mr. Mabin) for bringing the matter forward.
