Tlio mining trade was much better than it was twelve months ago, and a.good, healthy.miner could obtain employment, but tho .wages were small and tlie conditions under which they worked Were unsatisfactory. Twelve months ago it was no uncommon sight'to see between 40 and 50 experienced miners waiting at tho pithead of almost every mine-for work, but they were in almost every case turned, away disappointed. Tho speaker informed the .reporter-that-he' had thrown-up a position in one of the Yorkshire mine 3 to, comc to New Zealand, aS ho had been informed that the general conditions of work, ill tho Dominion mines wero milch, better than at Home, and .the wages higher. Another passenger, when approached on the subject of the-'conditions at Home, stated that he was a plasterer by trade, mid lie had not been able to secure regular work for winter after win-, ter. Such money as lie earned during the summer was barely sufficient, to keep things going, with occasional casual work during the winter .months. Tho : building trade was very slack. at present, and although tho conditions, brighter than they wero twelve months ago, there .was always a large number of tradesmen available to fill a position.
