MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.)' There was a brief sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, when a. dozen offenders appeared before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.. Richard Haldane.pleaded not guilty to a ■ chargo • of' using improper language,. in a tent off Willis Street. After hearing evidence, the magistrate was of opinion that a conviction must tra recorded. A fine of 40s. was imposed, aud Haldane was ordered to pay Bs. witnesses' expenses. Default •was fixed at'seven days' imprisonment'.An old man, named . John Redmond O'Donoghue,. pleaded guilty to a chargo of and\to. a breach (the sixth) of' his: prohibition order. For the first offence he was convicted and discharged, but for breneh .of the order he was. ordered to be detained for one year in the Inebriates' Home at Roto Roa Island.
Mary Joyce, Hugh Grunn, and Edward Taylor did not appear to answer charges of drunkenness. They were . ordered to forfeit their bail, 20s. in every instance. Donald M'Lean,; for ' drunkenness, - was ..fined 10s„ with the option of 48 hours' imprisonment. Seven first offenders/were also dealt with.
In/the afternoon, before Captain Hennah, J.P., William Hastie, who was arrested by Detective-Sergeant M'llveriey, was charged' with wilfully dninaging . 'a billiard cloth, valued at j!<i.l9s. 'Cd. ;The offence is alleged to have taken place on December li.,
