THE COMPETITIONS.
A SMALL PROFIT. The Rev. Father Hickson'. .(vice-presU dert) presided at a meeting of the Wellington Competitions Society, held in the Grand Hotel last evening. This was Iha first meeting of the society since tho festival, and was called for a double purpose—to receive - a - rough balance-sheet, and to bid .farewell, to the president, Dr. Arnold ..Izard,, who. .leaves.,.for. ..Tonga nest' week to take up the position of .Uoverii- •• uient Medical Officer. Jlr.' Dykes (secretary and treasurer) : presented a rough , draft of the balance-sheet, 'which showed a small profit. Some surprise .was shown at the smallness of. the amount to credit in view of the large attendances. Tho Eev. Father Hickson, in proposing the health of' Dr. Izard, who, ho regretted to say, was leaving Wellington,, said thatduring his connection with the society,' the president. had ■ hem no mero -figure-', head, but attended and presided over tho meetings with great regularity,: and had made, several valuable suggestions. Ho wished him all possible prosperity in -his'new sphere of action,.and hoped that he would visit Wellington before his three years' term, at. .Tonga had elapsed. 11l any case, New,. Zealanders who, visited, Tonga would receive a royal welcome, as Dr. Izard would be moving in royal circles. Messrs. J. M. Clark and W. : A. Flavell, members of the committee, supported the toast, which was drunk with musical honours.

Together with tho 'results of a similar effart on thf part of tho brotherhood, a good supplj nas boon ieceived by Sister Mildred, who will superintend the distribution. The children if tho Mission will bo in forco on Monday evening lit tho Herbert Street Hall, when a Christmas Tree will bo stripped of its burden of toys, etc. ' Signor Scotti, tho singor, appeared in the papers on his recent arrival in America as a "ho\V-10-get-t.hhi" expert.
