KARORI BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
Sir,—l received recently a rate notice from tho Karori Borough Council w-hich can only bo described as staggering. I doubt very much if there is another borough in tho Dominion which levies as high rates as Karori. In one way I was not surprised at tho amount demanded as most ratepayers know that Karori affairs have for a number of years past been grossly 'mismanaged; but I think the time is ripe for tho ratepayers to wake up. Tho rates at 2Carori now amount to a fair rental and there will be sanitary and water rates to bo added in the near future. However, without looking to future rates, tho ratepayers have now got to faco tho present position, and it is about time a general clearing-up took place. In the first place ,1 might suggest that the borough staff is overmanned. Road Boards, about. Auckland, for instance, in eomo casus employing several hundreds of men, do not find it necessary to permanently employ the professional skill employed by the Karori Council, and I am sure that a small place like Karori, with no important work going on, does not iustify the expense that at present exists. Karori ought to be the model residential suburb of Wellington; in reality it has shown less progress than any other, and if for this reason alone it is about time the ratepayers began to straighten out matters pretty considerably, after the fearful hash that has been made of the borough's affairs during the last few years.—l am, etc., PRUNING KNIFE. ,
