YACHTINQ. PORT NICHOLSON CLUB. The Port Nicholson Yacht Club decided races for first and second-class yachts on Saturday afternoon, the races taking place over No. 1 course. The familiar howling "northerly" prevailed, and most of the yachts were reefed down. The following are the results of the two races:— I'irst Class.' Matangi (6mia.), finishing time 5.20 - p.m ; 1 Wairere II (scratch), finishing time 5.25 p.m....V 2 Siren (Bmin.), finishing time 5.30 p.m. 3 Also started: : Windward (Bmin.), 5.35 p.m.; Mahina (lOniin.), 5.46 p.m.; Wairerel (Bmin.), 5.43 p.m. . Second Class. Lizzie (scratch), finishing time .5.28 p.m. 1 Eawene (7min;), finishing time 5.29 p.m. 2 Isca (Bmin.), finishing time 5.42 p.m. 3 Also started: Reverie (3min.), G. 2 p.m.; Taipari (6min.) and Amai (smin.) did not finish. CUTTER RACES. WHITE HORSE AND MOTHES CUPS. The annual rowing competition between the old Wellington Navals'- Association and the old Petone Navals' .Association for possession of 'the White Horse Cup, and also the rate between No. 3 Company Garrison Artillery (Wellington) and No. 5 Company Garrison Artillery (Petone), for the Mothes Cup, took' place on Saturday afternoon. Both races started from the. vicinity of the coalhulks, off the Esplanade, and finished at the Welliaigton Boating Association's shed in Jervois Quay—a distance of about one mile and a half. A very large crowd was present-at tho boatshed to witness the races, amongst the gathering being Colonel Menzies and Major Bevan, Mr. R. Mothes (president of the Old Petone Navals' Association), and Mr. E. T. Taj-lor (president Old Wellington Navals' Association).' The Fifth Regiment Band rendered selections throughout the afternoon, and arrangeiments in connection with the function, were in the hands of the Wellington Boating Association. Lieutenant R. ;H. Johnson (No. 3 Company) judged the race for tho White Horse Cup, • and Lieutenant Duncan'(of the same corps), .was judge of. the Mothes Cup. event.,,. Villars '(lifo. 3), W.'Sharon and B. Whitling (No. 2), J. Whitley (bow). Right , from the jump Wellington had the lead, and - they ivbn by two and a half to three lengths. Last year. Petone ■ were the • winners. In the Mothas Cup race tho Petone team (No. 5 Company) got home first by a length and a half. The crews m this race were:—No. 3 Company: J. Ls Gonito, Atkinson, Parkes, Quinn, Piehf'g, Wallace, Hayes, Houclven, Jacobs, Hankins, Taylor (cox). No. 5 Company: H: Martin. H. G. Shardlow, G. B. Dent R. Lee, F. C. F. Luxbv, E. J. Webb, L. M. Fi 11,, L. Stewart, j. Wilson, H. P. Mole, J. Edmunds (cox). No. 5 Company won last year. At a little ceremony at tho conclusion of the racing, Mr. Mothes, o,n behalf ofthe Petone Association, the Wiite Horse Gup to, Mr. Taylor (Wellington Association).. Several speeches, congratulating the winners, were made. . CYCLING. Bv 'I'eleerapli—Press Association— ConyriElit (Rec. December 8, 5.5 p.m.) New York, December 7. A six days bicycle race will begin in New York on Monday. Gordon Walker (Australia) won the five miles open professional trial, J. »allcer (Australia) being second.
