MUSEUM IN EXTREMIS.
■• ■ . . AT WANGANUI. (By Telegraph— Special Correspondent) WangaYiui, December 4. The Wanganui museum, which always has been, carried on in the face of great financial difficulties (being supported almost entirely by voluntary contributions) is now "on the rocks." According to the president of trustees (Mr. H. B. Watson) who says that, of the. money spent on it since the institution has been in existence, 75 per cent has come directly out of tho pockets of the people. This has been supplemented by subsidies from local bodies, but (says Mr. Watson) "all that the Government has ever given was a miserable- ,£2OO some years ago and any efforts to get help from the last three Governments have failed." The revenue, it seems, is not sufficient for upkeep and there is no opportunity of acquiring fresh specimens except by exchange. The trustees have therefore approached the Borough Council with a request either to increase its eubsidy or to take the museum over striking a small rate for its maintenance. The council has referred consideration of the matter to its Finance Committee.
