Garden Party at Government House. A very largo number of people attended the garden party which was given by their Excellencies the Governor and Lady Islington yesterday at Government House, ana for many it was the final opportunity of suying _ farewell to their Excellencies before their departure from New Zealand. Although the weather had been anything but promising earlier in the day, the sun came out in the afternoon and shone warmly for some time. Fortunately, the wind, which was decidedly chilly, dropped to a fitful breeze. The guests, as they arrived, were received by Lord and Lady Islington at the mniii entrnnco of the verandah, directly overlooking the. lawn, and a band, stationed on the lattct placo, played delightful music during the greater part of the afternoon. Lady Islington wore an exceedingly graceful [gown, the bodice being composed of beautiful white lace with diamond net, panels of the lace being continued down the whole length of the gown, back and front. The overdress of black chiffoti, bordered with heavy black embroidery, .was caught up in front with a diamond buckle, and a large, diamond slide fastened the satin belt at tlio back, from which' fell long ends weighted with jewelled tassels. .A Capuchin-shaped black velvet hat turned up. at the back, with massed frills of black chiffon and diamond buckles at each side, completed the toilette. The jewels worn were diamonds and pearls, and a larjje cluster of pure whito roses was tucked into the waist belt. Miss Stapleton Cotton wore a gown of grey channeuse, with embroidered white cuffs ami collar, and a black hat massed with long black plumes. Mrs. Guise was ii a gown of stone-grey crepe, embroidered iit the foot of the skirt, and a panelled coat of deei) violet. Her large hat was trimmed with violets. \ Mrs. Herdnian wore a powder-blue costume and blue hat; Miss Fraser was in grey; Mrs. I'omare wore a gown of dark blue chavmeuse, trimmed with Rose du Barri charmeuse, veiled with .point lace, and a large black hat massed with Eose due Barri-coloured flowers; Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher, striped bluo gown and blue hat; Mrs. Heard, black cliarmeuse with black satin coat and large white', hat with white plumes. Tea, was-served in the ballroom, buffets being placed down oue sid6 and at the end of the room. Beautifully shaded rhododendrons were, to be seen in the drawing-room, and roses with a delightful fragrance were elsewhere. . ■ Mr. and Mra.' G. Wright, The Terraco, who have been away from Wellington for some time, returned on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Darling, The Terrace, are leaving Wellington on a visit to Rotorua and Auckland. ' " . , Mrs. Law, of Toronto, will V« in chaJge of a demonstration of Canadian cooking with the New Perfection Blue Flame Oil Cookers to be given in the showrooms of E. W. Mills and Co., Ltd., 18 Victoria Street, this afternoon, and on Wednesday. Visitors attending the demonstration will be able to judge for themselves the merits of these stoves, one of which is, it is claimed, that in summer time they do not over-heat the room, a point that housewives will appreciate to the utmost. The demonstration is from 2.30 to 5 p.m.
