WASTE SPACE

THE ROOTS OP WELLINGTON,

Some criticism is offered by a Welling ton architect on tho shelter station and ladies' waiting-room which is being erected in connection with the tramways system in the centre of the open space in front of the General Post Office.

"It is wonderful," eays the critic, "how you waste, space in Wellington. Just look at that building being erected thereits dominant feature is going to be an overwhelmingly heavy Marseilles-tiled roof. In a congested place like Wellington, the flat roof should bo adopted— what an expanse of space open to the free air of the heavens such a departure would create. Take tho waiting-room roof space would have- made a fine little roof garden if it had been so designed, and a few touches of green lcares and coloured blossoms would have relieved the drab monotony of tho scene. I notice that several of the more modern large city buildings have adopted tho flat roof, including the now General Post Office, but if architects would got rid of the idea that iron and tiled roofs aro the only kind available, and induce their clients to specify the garden roof of the South of France, the entiro area of Wellington would in time become available as an airy place of retirement, healthy playgrounds for tho children, and yard spac» for tho sadly-restricted housewife."
