BAPTIST CONFERENCE.
♦ (By Telecrarh.—Presa Association.! Christchurch, October 21. - The Baptist Conference resumed to-day. Mr. Price presented the report of .tho North Island Young Men's Bible Cliu-s Union, l'ivo new classes had been affiliated, the total numb'er being 24. Several classes had contributed to home mission work. Mrs. Hoby, in the absence of Mr. Hin/ton, road the report of the Young Women's Biblo Class Union, to which thirty-two classes were affiliated. Mr. Velvin read the report of tho South Island Bible Class Union. -All the reports were rccoivc<l. . A deputation was received from the local branch of the Peace Council. .Mi. C. 11. N. Mackie addressed the assembly, and denounced the Defence Act. Mr. A. H. Brown, representative of the .Society of Friends from England, said that he hail been deputed by the Home Society to represent it in a propaganda lour of New Zealand. Mrs. Page also addressed tile conference emphasising tho claim of women to I>b heard on tho. question of defencc. She claimed, with tlie apparent approval of tho conference, that the conscientious scruples of sections of. the people should be respected.
The Hev. E. A. Kirwood was permitted to withdraw a motion of the Auckland Auxiliary relative to tho relation, of auxiliaries to tho union.
The Rev. J. J. North's motion dealing with the mode of election of the executive was submitted and carried.
Mr. Chidgoy moved a motion affecting tho machinery of the annuity fund, which was carripd.
Tho Rev. E. K. Kompton's motion, affecting the relation of aided t ' or newlyestablished churches, was discussed at some length. After tho Eov. P. H. Badford had moved an • amendment, it was decided to remit the whole matter to tho executive for submission at a' later stage. Mr. Cathie's motion regarding a levy ou membership of tho churches for union fluids was withdrawn.
In the afternoon a deputation from the Christchurch Ministers' Association wailed on the conference. Addresses of welcome were given by the Hovs. S. Henderson and J. Mackenzie. The Rev. J. J. North and Mr. A. S. Adams replied. It, was resolved, on the motion of Hie Pev. V. H. Eadford, to direct the executive, "That the programme for the next conference bB so arranged that 'the work of God in the churches' bo considered, together with the secretary's and general organiser's reports." t
