Beceipts from the electric tram service for the first week of operation of the complete system amounted to .£209, which is a record for the service. THE CANADA CADET BOYS. Invercargill, October 7. Mr. C. L. Lonquet, chairman of the Southland sub-branch of the Navy League, lias been advised tliat tho Canadian Cadets arrive at the Bluff from Australia on October 21. Tho sub-branch of the leaguo is arranging to entertain them in conjunction with the Trafalgar Day celebrations. TREASURE-SEEKER SOLD. Dunedin, October 7. The small steamer Wairoa, which was intended for use in search for tho ship General Grant's treasure, and which afterwards passed into the hands of Messrs. Stevenson and Cook, Port Chalmers, has been sold to Cashinore and Co., of Auckland. The price is reported to be about .CI7OO. ' TYPHOID IN FLAXMILLS. Palmepston, October 7. Considerable-, uneasiness exists among flaxmill hands. in this district at tho outbreak of typhoid at'certain flaxmills. Four cases are at .present in the Palmerston Hospital, one "being very serious. The Health Department,is investigating. At a meeting of tho Flax Workers' Union on Saturday last, resolutions bearing on the matter of better drinking supplies than arn afforded by the Mauawatu and Oroua Bivors, were passed. THE YOUNG FRENCHMAN. Auckland, October 7. A young Frenchman named St. Mar, who had previously complained of being hard-up, attempted to cohimit suicido in a bedroom at an hotel. He was found witli his braces tied round his neck,, suspended from a hat-peg. Ho' was cut down by tho licensee, little the worse.,- At the Police Court ho was remanded for a week-for medical observation. ■ QUARREL ON A TRAIN. Dunedin, October 7. In the Polico Court to-dav Frank Crumlish was charged that on tlio 4th in6t., on the Main Trunk express, between Auck : , land and Wellington, ho assaulted Victor . Smith. Tho evidence was that four seamen left Auckland on Thursday night under engagement to join the barque Titania at' Dunedin. At "Waiouru 1 another uian joined the. train, with, a bottle''of whiskv. • A quarrel eventually took place, and it was contended that Crumlish and Smith had "a sciiillg, in tlio course of wlucli the former bit. Smith's ear., Accused - admitted the facts, with tho exception of biting;.which ho denied. Accused was convicted, anil ' sentenced to one month's imprisonment. A PAINFUL ACCIDENT. Auckland, October 7. Miss Zoe Lee met with a painful accident yesterday on a launch while crossing Purangi bar. The young lady slipped, . and, falling backwards, struck' her head on-ths ' floor 'of 'the' 'boat. At the same time the propeller shaft caught her hair, and brought the engine up standing. Miss. Leo was taken to tlio hospital,' and is progressing as favourably as can be expected. She is suffering from'a severe scalp wound and shock. ARBITRATION COURT. Auckland, October 7. Numerous disputes and cases were dealt with in' the Arbitration Couri, several being adjourned, whilo in 'others the Court reserved its decision. ARBITRATION COURT. -Auckland, October 7. Tho Arbitration Court openod this morning. Tho list includes thirteen disputes, eight miscellaneous applications, and fifteen claims for compensation. In tho performing musicians' dispute, it was Mated that a settlement had been arrived nt-excepting in resect to ploying at roras. The case was adjournal for ovidcnco on that point. BRIEF MENTION.
