GRAIN FREIGHTS TO U.K.
THAT TWENTY PER CENT. RISE. IBy' Telsiiraph.—Pr««s Association.) ' . .'. Uhristchurch, October 1. The report that the rate of freight on .wiie'at and oats to the United Kingdom is going to be increased from • 255. to 80s., per ton has como as a surprise to exporters, who have- been able to do little shipping'business this season, not only on account of waiit of space, but. because the 2f)sV freight did not admit of the export of wheat. So far as wheat is concerned, however, th'e;in'ereased(freight will make very little difference. In fact, it .is- considered rathef'a good thing than otherwise, as it will:--keep wheat in the country, and prevent O. shortage next year. Should the hew crop, bo as limited in area as is believed,; the incraeso of !>s. per (on will niaW a difference of a penny per bushel ffi the case of oats, and growers will thus not bo able to take advantage of any rise in the market at Homo. The reason given for the increase in grain freights-is that the wool season is coming on, and that freights from Australia for grain are higher than those from New Zealand, being 325. 9d. to 35= per' ton. It is further stated that there is a probability of'the rates being increased to 40s. per ton. The reason for tho shortage-of space for ]S T ew Zealand grain is that steamers have- been going across to Australia to load for Homo ports at higher rates of .freight -■. ;-:; ; r- ; ;■-.■: ..; ■■*'.- ;
