PETONE AFFAIRS,

The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Council was held last evening. Tho following were present: The Mayor (Mr. JFEwan) and Councillors Short, List, Wakeham, Cox, Burridge, Trueman, Piper, and Brocklebank. The Mascote Picture Company wrote stating that' through th 9 inefficiency, or quality, of the giis supplied, they had on several occasions been unable to carry out their programme, and asked for permission to carry an electric wiro acrtJss Jackson Street and Fetone Avenue for (ho purpose of obtaining power from the Gear Company. The matter was discussed at some length, and it was finally decided that the request be- refused until the borough engineer be given an opportunity for inspection prior to reporting to the council. A letter was received from Police Sergeant Forster. l'o damage to the' council's property, stating that every effort will be made to trace the offenders, and that the names of the' persons who are alleged to have damaged the dressing-room door had been obtained, the amount of the damage paid to the contractor, and that the alleged offenders will be brought before the Court on October 16. He is inquiring the amount of the damage done to the lamps at tho corner of Petone Avenue and Gear Street, and advised that the suspected offender be prosecuted.—Received. The secretary of Sr. David's Cricket Club wrote asking that as they have topdressed their wicket on the, Recreation I Ground, no further permission be given for football to be played on Xo. ■( ground. Tt was decided that the request be granted. • , , • A deputation from tho "Fire Board wail*ed upon the council, and asked if the town clerk could be appointed to act as seeretary to the hoard. A motion to this effect was lost, most of the councillors maintaining that there were plenty of local men who could fill the position, and that the town clerk had finite enongli to do.
