MASTERTON NOTES.

A man-named.'Justin Christian.is snip-, posed to have fallen'off Castlopoint reef and been drowned. , 'An alarm of fire was sounded at nine o'clock last night. The cause was a burning outhouse at the residence occupied by Sir. T. Barrer at Lansdowne. The damage done was not serious. . The lambing percentage in tho To Wharau.. district is likely to bo a record. Feed is also more plentiful in that part than for a number of seasons past. A bitterly cold day was experienced yesterday, and snow fell on. the lower Tararua Ranees. .The IrouMisbiiig season opens to-mor-row. The local rivers and streams are well stocked with trout, and anglers expect a very profitable season. •Sir. W. Perry, of Penrose, has disposed of a. line of two end four-tooth Romneys' for Patagonia. •. y * Only one bankruptcy has beon recorded in the Masterton district during, the month of September. There were two for the same period last year. For the ninemonths ending to-day, nine petitions in bankruptcy liav« been filed, * compared with fourteen for the same period Inst year. .' '. Sitting in bankruptcy at Masterton on Saturday, Sir Robert Stout gfanted discharges to Thomas William Miller, Robert F,. Howell. John Anketell, and Leonard J. Hooper. The discharge of Thomas J. Dw.ver was suspended for three months. The Chief Justice was unablo to complete the list at the Supreme Court last week, and he has appointed a special sitting of the Court for October 30, to deal with the remaining cases. A good deal of ploughing lias yet to bo done, in the Masterton district, and some of the oat. crons will bo very late. Mr. A. J. Minifie, who is retiring from the painting and paper-hanging business to enter the general storekeeping business, was on Saturday last presented by his employees, and by the employees of Mr. C. E. Dniiicll, with which firm he was associated for many years, with a valuable j tea and coffee service and an illuminated I address. The Masterton Golf Club defeated, the Middle Run on Saturday last in some interesting matches played on tho Lansdowlie links.
