MOKAU INQUIRY.
PRELIMINARY MEETINGS TO-DAY. The committees appointed (ono by the Legislative Council and one by the House of Representatives) to consider and report upon the petition of Mr. Joshua Jones, of Mokau, will hold their first meetings tp-day but only preliminary business will be transacted. It i* understood that the Iwo committees will each elect a chairman, and will then sit jointly and elect a enntmon chairman. Oilier matters to be arranged to-dav will 1)3 the laying down of the linos On which the inquiry is to be conducted, and the calling of witnesses. A suggestion lias ljecll in ado that the Government -Oiould provide Jlr. Jones with the assistance of counsel in conducting his case. Severn! members of the House consider that lite suggestion is a reasonable one, and should bo acceded 10.
