THE FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY. A good many people were astonished to find the Wellington Free Puhlic Library closed yesterday (Dominion Day) owing to the day having been declared a City Council staff holiday. Tlio following letter, probably, expresses the feeling of a large section of the community on this subject :— "September 2,1. 1912. "Sir, —T was surprised on calling; at the Public, Library this afternoon, to"find tho premises closed. I was, of course, aware that it was Dominion Day and a City Council holiday, but was not aware that that was any renson for closing a public institution of such overy-day importance and benefit to the community at large. Tho fact (hat a tiny minority of the public is holiday-making should not, in my opinion, servo as an argument for closing the librarv.—l am, etc., "H. P. ALLEN,".-
