THE NAVY LEAGUE.

Tho following letter is being ?ent to the headmasters of the local school branches of the Navy Leaguo by Mr, Palmer, thchon. secretary.— Tho subject chosen for this year's essay competition is the same ns that for last, year, viz., "Why Should the lfritish Ernpiro Possess an* All-Powerful , 'Navy." It is desired, ns before, to impress upon tho minds of the boys nnd. girls how much (hey owe to the selMemal ami determination of our nation (both individually and collectively) in the past: how much tb'e future welfare of the Empire depends upon Imperial federation; and how absolutely necessary it is that the masj of the people should fully realise the extent of the ruination and : distress that naval disaster would mean to the Empire, and to Now Zealand in particular. The details of tho examination .'ire left entirely to rhe head tencher at each of the school brunches of the league. The names of the most deserving competitors (say 10 per cent, of the total) should l>e handed in htthis office before tho end of October. I take lliis opportunity of reminding you that lwoks and badges for juvenile members for this year are now available.
