HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.)

Tho quarterly meeting of tho Hutt Licensing Bench was held at the courthouse, Lower Hutt, on Wednesday. Dr. A. M'Arthur presided, and with h'iin were Messrs. Cudby, Cotton, and Welch. Transfers were granted as follow:—M. E. Young, Family Hotel, Lower Hutt, to H. C. Lawson; I(. Quinn, Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt, to E. Crabtree. On the request of tho licensee (F. E. Bryan) of the Taita Hotel, tho question of transfer to W. E. Manning was held over for a week.

The Hutt Borough Council will presently be able to reduce its bank overdraft by £5000, as a well-known'Hutt resident has deposited that amount with the council's treasurer at an interest rate of 1 per cent, per annum. As tho council pays the Dank of New Zealand 5{ per cent. per. annum, the borough will be able to effect a saving of £~o per annum on ihis one transaction. Last week the borough bank overdraft stood at i! 10,080. Mr. J. Culford Bell, Lower Hutt, who returned this week from tho Auckland Elocutionary and Musical Competitions, brought back all tho special prizes in his classes of elocution, and was awarded the championship, the judgo' remarking that his "Dickons" character sketch was tho best in tho competition. For this item Mr.- Bell was awarded a special gold medal. Mr. Bell, who entered' for eight items, won seven of them. .

Up till tho present no nominations have been received for the extraordinary election on tho Lower Hutt Borough Council, caused through the death of John Watson Stevenson. Tt is,- however understood that Mr. H. Baldwin, an cx-couucillor, will be a candidate.

Tli? Wilford Election Committee held a social evening in St. Augustine's Hall, Petono, last evening.
