FOR BIGGER BOATS.
A WHARF 790 FEET LONG. Doubtless the magnificent array of wharves which now fringo the edge of Lambton Harbour will accommodate all tho vessels that are likely to visit Wellington for somo years, but sooner or later tho big vessels which now plough tho Atlantic daily will hav« their contemporaries trpding m all parts of tho world, and they will require snug berthago in tho ports which they will visit. The Glasgow Wharf is already 630 feet long (by 143 ft. Gin. in width), but the. board accepted a tender a daj; or two ago to extend it a further 160 ft., /straight out into the harbour, thus providing a wharf 790 feet in length. "T shed is also to be extended by another 153 feet. This will leave a clear space of 37 feet between the outer end of the shed and tho end of the wharf. As this wharf is reserved pretty well for tho export trade, tho extra length will be immediately serviceable for the accommodation of coast craft, which bring to Wellington butter, cheese, flax, etc., for transhipment to the Home steamers. Tho 143 feet berth ncross tho end of tho wharf will also bo utilised for tho same purpose. It is not intended to extend tho railway motals any further down the wharf than at present. Practically tho same structural plan of wharf-building adopted in tho Glasgow Wharf will bo continued in tho extension, but horizontal fenders of wood will bo used near tho water-line. Tho contractors (Messrs. T. Dillon, and Co.) will probably iiso lotara wood for tho blooring the floor of tho 'wharf.
Shipmasters will learn with interest that there will be a depth of water of 34 feet on tho western or inner side of tho wharf, and. 38 feet on tho outer side.
