CHRISTCHURCH SENSATION.
WELL-KNOWN DOCTOR ARRESTED ON SERIOUS CHARGE. (By Tclcfrraph.-Frcos Association.) Christchurch, September 5. Thero was a sensation in tho city to'-dny when it was noised abroad that Dr. C. J. Russell had been arrested on a serious charge. Dr. Russell, a member of the North Canterbury Education Board, and a prominent member of several local societies, was arrested by Detectives Ward and Gibson on a warrant charging him with having unlawfully used an instrument. In the afternoon, Dr. Russell was formally charged beforo Mr. Bishop, S.M., with having, on Juno 28, 1912, unlawfully used an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. Chief Deiectivo Bishop appeared to prosecute. Accused was not represented by counsel. An application was made by tho polico that accused should bo formally remanded till September 10. It was also stated that a further remand till September 1G lvotlid he applied for. Accused applied for bail. The chief detective urged that tho sureties should bo substantial. Bail was allowed, accused in ,£2OO and ono surety in .£4OO. Dr. Charles .Tames Russell is now 83 years of age.' Ho studied medicine at tho Anderson University, Glasgow, gaining the degree of F.P.S. and L.S.A. in 1869. Ho took a diploma at the Svracuso University, U.S.A., 1876. In Christchurch ho was prominent in quasi-public life, taking particular interest in social and l educational matters. At present he is a member of tho Education Board of North Canterbury, and has held a prominent place on the Christchurch School Committees' Association. Ho was also an active member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, tho Horticultural Society, and a great number of other organisations.
