THE FIELD PEA.
GROWING FOE THE MARKET.
An inquiry made of the Fields and Experiment Division of the Agricultural .Department as to the best method of growing field peas for marketing has elicited the following reply in tlio Department's Journal:—"The chief requirement of the field pea is a elenn, well-prepared, and firm seed-bed. This plant, in common with other legumes, prefers a soil on o limestone formation; it also produces good crops on other lands wliero lime has been previously applied. Tlio field pea responds to phosphatic fertilizers. Thero is no special cultivation for the pea. The land should be prepared as for the usual crop, but to ensure success tlio weeds must be controlled. The poa, under ordinary conditions, cannot bo considered a cleaning crop; the haulms lie •apart, and so allow weeds to assert themselves. On tho other hand, if the crop is cleaned by hoeing, tho pea would, to flome extent, assist. This method is, however, not usual. The varieties of peas that aro usually availed of aro the Partridge and the Blue pea."
