Sho will proceed via Cook Strait to Westport, where she will take in bunker coal. In all • probability tho vessel will return via tho West Coast to tho Bluff. It is understood that very few whales have been secured by tho Bluff whalors since they commenced operations some months ago. It is stated that whales are very scarce in South Island waters. THE CONSTABLE UPHELD. Dunedln, August 27. Arthur Patriok M'Kay was convicted for drunkenness and finod ss. at tho Police Court this morjjing. His caso had occupied three days, the defendant accusing Constable Havelock of having kicked him heavily several times, and also denying that lie was drunk. The magistrate : held that there was no foundation for the defendant's allegation. PURITY OF SEEDS. Christchurch, August 27. The committeo appointed by the recent Canterbury Agricultural Conference to consider the question of securing purity of seeds recommends that legislation ehouid be . introduced prohibiting the sale of seed containing noxious weeds; that every bag of seed, live pounds and upwards, should carry a certificate of purity; that samples be taken from time to ; tirao and submitted to the Government' Seed Analyst for report, and that (he ; analysis bo published. ."GET A LEGAL ADVISER." Cases at the Magistrate's Court againsf a number of Territorials, for failing to attend camp and against youths for failing to register were adjourned, the magistrate advising the prosecuting officer (Ser-. geant-Major O'Hara) to obtain the services of a legal adviser. At an inquest on the infant found in a milk pan at Henderson, tho jury found . that death was due to exposure, consequent on neglect by tho mother, a single ' woman named Rose Herd, who has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. . A deputation from railway leagues favouring establishment of. a railway from WaipulHirau to Masterton will wait on the Minister for Public Works to-morrow, urging tho necessity of constructing tho lino.
