SHORT-LIVED STRIKE.
AT TALISMAN MINE. 'ENDED IN TWENTY-FOUR HOTTES, (By Telegraph— Press Association.) ~ , Auckland, August 27. A. strike by miners employed by the P a Talisman Consolidated Company (Karaugahake) has taken plaoa, but proved of brief dnrati.on.. It commenced on Monday afternoon' at four o'clock, and concluded | to-day at the same hour, when the after- ha npon shift resumed work. Three hundred men were affected. The men came out <" • ostensibly because the, company had taken "* into' its employment a member of the u D Waihi Engine-Drivers' and Firemen's {„ Union (registered under the Arbitration tij Act), but, as the raining industry at tli Karangahake is being carried on under *" em agreement ratified by the Arbitration "' Court, the reason given would not appear a] .to be sufficient. j'■ pi It seems'rather that the troublo was pi brought abont~by internal.dissension ! n " the union, and precipitated by the de- „ feat of that section opposed to .arbitration ■ methods at the recant election of execu- ¥( iive- officers. They apparently seized the pi opportunity offering to create farther so friction, and persuaded the miners going j* rn shift yesterday afternoon not to go Tr>de'rgroiind because of the presence there y •.'" Morgan (president of the branch " union) presiding, and Mr. Sawyer (presi- jj dent of the Thames Union) also being in " attendance. There was a full muster, of 3, union. members,, including the workers, of the New Zealand Crown mines, who, with £ the consent of the General Manager (Mr. J T. M'Combifl), had ceased work in order * lb attend • the meeting, which was held with closed doors. Between one and two K o'clock V-'deputation from " the meeting waited npon the superintendent of (he -P Talisioan Company, and asked if the n management would allow the men to re- S sume work. The reason given for this re- « quest was that the driver objected to had P left the employment.of the-company. A ri reply in- the affirmative was given. . a The man who was objected to left the | place stating, that he did not <f wish to- cause, any- trouble,-and that the e: people in 'the', boardingho-ase where he ; P was staying were threatened with a boy- t cott.'. Work.was resnmed. at four o'clock. « - The men are working iunder, an award, J) and are therefore liable to a. penalty in, C striking. ; ' .• . ... c It is . understood thafcj the deputation from the men to the manager also asked that, in future, the'names of applicants for engine-driving should be submitted to 1 the union before they'were employed. This was refused. The; management,in- <j tunated .that, in .future, only enginedrivers who were ) not opposed to the Thames Miners' Union Would be employed. :; THE DEIVEp LEFT.
