WANT OF ROAD ACCESS.
1 HARDSHIPS OP SETTLERS. "We pretty well hold the palm in Now Zealand for mud," said a member of a Gisbome deputation to tho Hon. W. Eraser, Minister for Public Works, yesterday. Mr. Eraser: Cook County? The deputationist: Cook, Waiapu, and Waikohu Counties. I think wo hold tho record. Mr. Eraser: There are a good many aspirants for that record, as far as 1 can hear. Tho deputationist: I think that if you came to our district you vrill find that wo are pretty near the top Thoro avo settlers who have been there from fivo to fourteen years, and up to tho present have no road access, and they havo been paying rates into the Treasury all the timo. Wo ask you to assist them in getting access to their properties. Wo hope for an assurance that in tho next financial year our loans will bo supported by liberal subsidies.
