A guarantee of 400 cows is required, and at a meeting last week thoso prevent promised JJ2SO. It is understood that there will be no difficulty in obtaining the remainder of the amount required. Mr. Kichard Milltam died here on Tuesday, at the age of 79. Deceased came to l'eilding with (he first batch of settlers for the Manchester Block, some 38 years ago. He was an expert bricklayer and contractor, and was the father of the trario in this district. A complete pasteurising plant is to bo installed at the Itungotea butter factory. The plant should hare been iu Now Zealand now, but for tho fact that the strikes in England have delayed its shipment. ' Operations with tho plough are now being pushed ahead throughout this district, and some farmers have already finished this pari of the season's work. The wet weather has delayed the work somewhat, but the prevailing conditions now nro favou.-ablo to producing good crops. When a traction engine was working at Mr. D. M'Lcan's farm at Bcaconsficld last week, a spark from tho engine sot tire to a stack ot ryo grass. Things looked rathor serious for a timo, as thero were two other stacks very closo. Fortunately the neighbours noticed tho smoke, and worked so willingly with wet sacks, etc., that u considerable loss was saved. The sandy tracts along tho sea, coast between Sandon and Foxton are being made up into rich, productive soil, Homo time ago it was stated that tho Sandon-to-Foxton tram ran through "No Man's Land." What folks in the country will do to get up n dance was proved on Wednesday at lieaconslield, where the ladies of tho Tenuis Club went to endless trouble and scored success. The largest hall in tho district was not available, because it was tilled with grain, so, when Jlr. Usmar's barn was offered (despite Hie fact that it was quarter-filled with hay when _ the committee saw it on Tuesday morning), .Airs. Grieo and three young ladies armed themselves with forks and pushed the hay through the feed-holes to the milkingshed below. This was no light task. Almost choked by dust as they were, they laboured on cheerfully until dusk, by which timo they had mado a complete transformation. ' The appointments at tho local post office for tho convenience of tho public - aro fast becoming as complete as modern innovations can raako them. To the list of conveniences is now being added a ponny-in-thc-slot stamp machine, which is to bo placed at a convenient spot outside. Mr. Croft, tho Wanganui Education Board's foreman, has completed tho additions to tho Taikorca and Linton schools. Over .£3O has teen saved by tho board carrying out tho Taikorca additions instead of accepting tho lowest tender. ' On Saturday night tho Works Committeo of the Feilding Beautifying Society met tho expert' from Messrs. Horton and Co.'s establishment, and made arrangements for the carrying out of tho schemo for laying out tho lalro portion of the South Street Reserve. A start is to be made next week. Notwithstanding tho fact that thoro has been a. considerable number of clearing soles of dairy stock iu this district in tiio past few months, prices for mod milking oows aro high, and aro stilt on the up grade. At tho latest stock sales extremely good prices were realised for milking cows, and the demand was not satisfied.

Fenwiek, of Kamairaia, won the first prize, killing all his birti9 iii ono nomination. Tho f.econd and third Erizp : nioncy was divided between Messrs. aurenson, H. Jensen, R. J. King, and A. Buick.
