FEATHERSTON.
A debating contest took place ncro on Wednesday evening between two teams, representing the Feathorston and Martinborough Debating Societies. The subject was: Should the Immigration of Asiatics to Australasia bo Prohibited?" For tho affirmative the speakers from Martinborough were:—Messrs. A. D. M'Ldod, H. P. Heycock, J. Jolly, 0. W. Cobb, and K. C. Tcnnant; and the Feathorston side ffas supported by Messrs. W. G. Miller, Jr. B. Tail, A. C. Holms, J. 11. Fieldhoiife, and G. T. Baker. Tho judge, Mr. J. W. Card, made his award in favour of the Featherston Club by 4H points to 427. A successful "social" and dance, arranged by the local Oddfellows' Lodge, was held in tho Town Hall on Thursday night. Tho Featherston Territorials are holding a military ball hore on August ,29. At MaTtinborough on Monday evening a farewell "social" was tendered to Mr. A. M. A. Wright,, lately manager of the Tawaha Dairy Company's factory, when the suppliers modo him a presentation of a silver tea kettle. Tho Town Board is considering tho question of improving tho Town Hall hero, and an architect has been engaged to prepare plans and estimates of tho proposed alterations. Tho building is a profitable source of revenue to tho township. Tho Featherston Dairy Company's factory will be ro-opened for, tho season today. Tho other co-operativo factories .in the Lower' Valley, viz., at Tawaha and Otaraia, commenced operations las', week. .The last-named paid out to its suppliersfor the past season Is. Id. per lb, on butter-fat, and will carry a balance forward.
