RECAPTURED

THE TWO" WEARY ESCAPEES. George Paul and Andrew Bergerfou, who escaped from Point Halewell prison camp, Wellington, on Wednesday, August 14, were recaptured at 2 o'clock "yesterday morning at the house of Bergerson's father, at Onga Onga, Hawke's Bay. Tho pair had arrived at the house on. tho Tuesday night, and it was Mr. Bergeron's intention to hand them ever to tho police on tho followiuz morning. Howover, Constable Fearnley, one of the Searchers, called at the house in the niea.iitinie, and the escapees were placed in his charge. The two, much-wearied of their adventure, were brought to Wellington by train yesterday evening, and were lodged in tho IVwace prison. They have- not been very communicative since their return, to the city, but they do not deny that - their path during the week of "liberty" was other than a rosy ono. It has transpired that two euits of plain clothes were left at a place near the point of oscapo for Paul and Bergerson, and suspicion for this has fallen on some young men who were at one time couinulsonly stationed at Point Halswell, Having changed their clothing, th» escapeps may have simply caught a tram car to Courtenay Place, another car to Island Bay, and then made off round the coast. On Thursday they wero in Oharra Valley, and on Friday («i say (h<. i»licu) tlioro were traces of them at, Parnparauniu. Nothing is known of their movements between then and the time of their capture. The young men state that they walked u i fi. ,ray, [t is thought probable that other means of covering ground were adopted somewhere along the route Thev were not at all fresh when captured, and not altogether sorry that tho affair had ended. This morning Paul and Bergerson will be required to answer for their escape, either in the Magistrate's Court or before the visiting justice at the prison.
