THE TE ARO RAILWAY.
Sir,—Tout report of last Monday's Chamber of Commerce meeting, being necessarily somewhat condensed, it has, I regret to say, given another opportunity to Mr. A. L. Hunt, in his usual disingenuous fashion, to criticiso what I did not say. Will you permit me to explain that my remarks as to the future population, of Mir.imar were based on estimates mado at'various limes by advocates of a lailway to that district. These, estimates liavo ranged from 20,000 to 70,000 in a period of from 20 to 30 years. The present population is, X believe, about 1200. I still consider that the estimated increase, even to 30,000, in the time given, is absurdly excessive, but I did not say that the borough would never attain.that number. If Mr. Hunt would multiply his 20 years by five, perhaps we might be nearer agreement on this momentous question. But this has nothing to do with the establishment, of a goods station at Te Aro, which is the particular matter on which the council has dared to difl'er from Mr. A. L. Hunt, and by so doing has earned the complimcnt of abuse from himself and his fellow agitators in their amusing struggles for public notoriety.— I am, etc., E. G. PILCHER. Wellington, August 10, 1012.
