THE PRICE OF COAL.
Sir,—lu his desire (o get another railway built in the Duller district, you report that Mr. Colvin, lalo Minister for Mines, stated that if this were done coal "could be put on trucks at less than 2s. per ton." ]( is strange that men occupying responsible positions should make such palpably ridiculous statements. Surely Mr. Colviii knows that tho hewing rato for coal in his district is considerably nioro than tho amount mentioned, and this is only a portion of the charges incurred in putting coal on trucks. Unless, therefore, the lato Minister for Mines is ignorant of this fact, he must know that his statement would only lie possible of accomplishment by a considerable reduction in the hewing rat© and iu wages generally. I presume Mr. Colrin does not contemplate this. If, however, this js not his solution, will ho inform us how iie arrives at his figures?— 1 am, etc., DRUMMER,
