HOCKEY.
SATURDAY'S MATCHES, Wellington (2 goals) v. Metropolitan (2), Victoria College (2 goals) v.. Government Life (0). Karori (1 goal) v. United (0).
The weather on Saturday was gloriously fine, and conducive to good hockey, but the grounds were tticky. The scoring in all three senior games was very low, tho contests themselves being devoid of much interest.
WELLINGTON-METROPOLITAN. This game, played on No. 1 ground, Days Day, was conspicuous for its dullness. Right throughout the game (hero was a lack of vim. Perhaps the stickv ?. r " u i n<l fl(1Jo<1 to tllc slowness of the plnv. Wellington (playing a, forward short) were Iwaton at tho bully, and the Reds Ijccamo agressivo. Tho Blue backs cleaved the situation, and Rcihl carried tho ball well down tho right-wing, but his centre went a-begging, and M'Gregor hit out. Desultory play hero followed, onlv the hue fielding of Harty and Porter saving tlio game from decrepitude. After a moment s givc-and-tako play, Wellington changed their opponents' goal, and Hay sent in a good shot, and tho Blues were ono up. Metropolitan now infused more vim into their play, but Clarke hung on to the ball too long. At last M'Grr'w got the ball away with a long, quick shot, and passing between the forwards gave Jackson an easy chance, which ho accepted, and the score now read one all. I'rom now on till half-time, tho play was dreary. The.ball seemed to stick, and tlioro was aji entire absence of life, about the game. M'Gregor, on the Red's side, and Uarty for tho Wellingtonians, were the only two capable of hard hitting, and half-time provcil a welcome spell. On resuming, the same lifeless play continued. ■ Wellington seemed to fall away, and Metropolitan becamo aggressive. Once, M'Gregor came through by himself, and, reaching the circle, just missed a goal by a foot. Keeping up tho attack, tho Rods surged about tho circlo, and Robinson poked a goal into the net, which just crawled in. Wellington now saw defeat looming up, so Morpeth left his goal and did his best to revive the latent energy. The Blues kept on tho hustle, and just before time, Bay, who was palpably off-side, equalised the scores, and so tho dreary game was brought to a finish with honours even. Mr. Martin Luekio .was the referoe.
COLLEGE-GOVERNMENT LIFE. College did battle with Giovernmcn/t Life ou No. 3 ground Day's Bay, and a very poor battle it was. College played badly, and tho Government Life men played worse, so the contest that ensued was a scrappy affair all through. As is usual with College, they went away at the start, and Griffiths sent in an 'easyshot, and prospects i'or a big score were large. However, they seemed to go from bad to worse. Government Life played without any combination whatever. Several times tho wings would carry- tho ball down the hold, but then it would end, and College would return to tho attack. Kvon their play was mostly of nn indi■vidual 1 nature. They certainly had the better, of the play, and Government Life were kept busy in the circle conceding corners, but College could make no use of them. Thus the play continued till half-time, with College on the aggressive. The second spell was similar to the first. The play was wretched, poky, and ragged. Individualism was the main feature throughout. At times Government Life looked dangerous, but that was all—they never were, really dangerous. And so the play ensued until C. Strack improved the College score with a good shot. There was no further score, and the whistle soon brought a close to a game wholly uniuterestiug. Air. J. Gendall was referee. KARORI-UNITED. At'Karon Park these two teams pro. .Tided, tho best match of the afternoon. With Loader injured, Murphy recoveririgy.and Dnviosraway, it.wasjlhpught that United's • chances .wero good,- but the suburbanites just managed to secure victory, well on in the second spell. United started off in a businesslike manner, for tho forwards, ■ plaving splendidly, . took the ball well down the field, but good defence by L. Davies stemmed the tide. Then Loader secured and looked like scoring, but Dwyer saved finely and tho anxious moment was gone. Then. United got going again, and pretty passing took them down into Karon's twentv-five, but the defence was suro and sound. The Blacks now stormed the circle again, Loader and Murphy both having shots, which were well stopped. Shortly afterwards Loader's ankle gave way aiid ho retired temporarily. United now attacked and although they could not score the play was good and deserving of better results. Half-time sounded with no score. Play being resumed, tho Reds tried hard, Collins, Boyd, and Sniythe combining well, but A. Parlon was secure, and the attacks were frustrated. After spending a few moments in United's circlo, Karori managed to goal, M'KelJop being responsible. Although play was strenuous no further scoring ensued and Mr. Cockrell's whistle brought a good gamo to a close.
