Mr. W. Warn, who has been in indifferent; health for some time, leaves shortly for Rotorua to undergo a course of treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. Wade, and Mr. and Mrs. Powrie, of Paraparnunm, contemplate taking up residenco in Sydney. Mr. Dugald Thomson, who is to enter a. hostelry at Takapuna, Auckland, is fhortly to be entertained by Manakau friends.
Another effort is to bo made to convert Otaki into a town board, and a deputation will shortly be sent to Wellington to wait on.the Minister, with a request that the Government will favourably consider the matter.
A deal of interest was evinced in the chnmpionship ladies' hockey match played here on Wednesday between the two local teams, who are leading for tho Brown banner. Tho game was a good one, somo capital play being witnessed for the full time. Tainui started off vigorously, but, Otaki soon settled down to fine plav, and, by judicious hitting, wero frequently able to attack. Shortly after tho start of the second spell Otaki scored, Miss Kih'nister securing a neat goal. This was. tho only score put on though, and play, of an even nature continued.
At th"e last Horowhenua County Council meeting the tender of A. A. Brown was accepted at ss. per yard for metalling the AVaikanae Road. It was decided to endeavour to have the railway crossings, which were recently closed at Te Horo, re-opened, and that an estimate of tho cost for river protective works at Waikanae River be secured. The Levin Borough Council, made application for an nrea of land near the borough to be transferred to it from the country, for scenic purposes—This was granted. Mr. Harold Cockrell wrote, drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Gorgo Road, and intimating an intention te claim damages should his driver or horse be injured.' The resignation of Mr. Whetlan as a member of the local school committee has been accepted, he having left the district. Arrangements are being made to have tho vacancy filled. ' Mr. Thomas, who has left this district to enter into business on his own account in tho South Island, will be missed in social and sport circles. Prior to leaving ho was made the recipient of a token of esteem from the local Ladies' Hockey Club.
William Luck, who was until recently an employee, at the Factawii flaxuviU, appeared at the local I'olico Court on Tuesday on a charge of breaking twelve panes of glass and a window sash, the property of A. A. Brown. It was stated in evidence that accused visited the flaxhiill while under the influence of liquor, and did the damage-, complained ot. Tlio Bench convicted himi and impos«l a fine of £Z.
Tho local Golf Club and Hcathcrlea played a friendly match this week, n draw being declared. Several Raines remained' unfinished. Dv. Davis (president, of tho club) and Mrs. Davis entertained tho visitors at tea. During the past seven months 112$ tons of cheese have been made al the Mauakiiu factory—all graded first-class.
