A serious fire occurred at 4.30 this morn' ing, at tho Post Office, tho Telephone Exchange, and Public Office being completely destroyed. Tho fire was confined to these departments. Tho stock and valuation departments occupy a part of tho same building. They were saved, also tho public clock. Mails for (own delivery this morning were destroyed. Telephono communication will ho-"interrupted for somo days. Tho firo started on the ground floor of tho public office.

DIED IN THE STREET. Timaru, August 15. Mr. William Martin, a middle-aged , man, who was for many years manager for G. and T. Young, jewellers, dropped dead in Stafford Stroet, at 8.30 o'clock this morning. He was greatly respected. A medical man had boon attending him for some lime for heart trouble, aud an Inquest is considered unnecessary.

Glover (present secretary), A ballot is to bo taken when the nominations from ths unions affiliated to the Federation nave reached headquarters.

Auckland, August 15. Tho Auckland General Labourers' Union has nominated Mr. M. J. Savage as president of the Federation of Labour party, tho vice-president Mr. Semplo, tho organiser, and Mr. Duncan, of Huntly, as secretary. Mr, Savago was Socialist candidate for the Auckland Central seat at Inst election.

PRICE OF TIMBER, Invsrcarglll, August H. Tho Southland Sainnfllera' Association havo resolved to reduce the.' prico of timber by 30 per cent. A Southland sawmiller stated to-day that at a recent meeting of the association it was decided to allow tho. Duuodin builders 30 par cent, discount instead of the ton percent, previously deducted. This action was due to eouio largo firms having withdrawn from tho association and cutting prices, also to competition from tho West Coast. Invercargill builders receive five per cent, discount.

AUCKLAND EXHIBITION. Auckland, August H. .Much' intorest is being . msnifested throughout Now Zealand in tho forthcoming Auckland Exhibition, and numerous .applications for space havo been received by tho secretary. From present indications, it is apparent that the whole of the spaco in tho main building, 300 ft. by 400 ft., representing an area of 120,000 squaro feet, will bo applied for within a comparatively short period, aud the probabilities are that the executive will have to toko into consideration the question of building additional annexes.

ALLEGED BIGAMY. Gisborne, August 14. George Henry Hayward, au elderly man, was arestcd to-night on a warrant from Napier, and will, be charged at the court. to-inorrow with' bigamy. He is alleged to have contracted two marriages at lnvorcargill, ono on April 21, 1877, and the other on March 10, 1894.

CONCILIATION COUNCIL. Gisborne, August 14. A pplicatious have gone forward for a sitting of the Conciliation Council to bo held at Gisborno to hear the Gisborne drivers' and Gisborne freezers' disputes regarding the new demands. Mr. H, Hunter, of Christclrurch, with Messrs. Q. Hartlett and G. Inglis. will be the assessors for tho Drivers Union, and Mr. J. Keardon, ol Wellington, with Messrs. A. J, Anderson. and A. Hill, for the' Freezers' Union.

FOUND DROWNED. Blonheim, August 14. An old moa named John Warren was found drowned in o, creek in Blenheim to-day. Ho had evidently been dead for some hours when tho body was discovered. Although (he strikers seem determined there have already been a few defections from their ranks, while' others, sooner than accept the company's terms, have left Kaitangata for fresh fields.
