MINERS STOP WORK
DISPUTE ABOUT A FEDERATION LEVY. A difference of opinion among the workers at tho Scddouville Stnto Coal Mine over the payment of tho strike levy ordered by the Now Zealand Federation of Labour, came to a head on Wednesday morning, when tho miners struck work. Tlio reason stated was that the men declined to work with some of their number who refused to pay the federation levy. The stoppage of work did not last long. Tho miners held a meeting at sciuo time on Wednesday, and decided to resume work on Thursday morning. Tho Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Mines) stated last evening that it was no part of the function of the Government to undertake tho enforcement of a levy by. a union ■upon, its members. He had given instructions to the manager at tho mine that non-payment, of the levy was not to be any bar to employment. For tho rest, tho matter was oho between the union (or federation) and its members.
About 110 men mo employed at the Seddonvillo mine. It is understood that only a small number refused to pay tlio federation levy.
