SEVERE COMPETITION AHEAD.
—fr. NEW MARKETS WANTED. The Hon. Thomas Mackenzie returned from his visit to the Egmont electorate last evening. At Arnmolio ho was met by the Mayor of Wnngnnui and a number of leading cjtizeus, who expressed thejr pleasure at his appointment as High Commissioner and wished him every success in that capacity. At Palmorston North Mr. Mackenzie was.met on the railway station platform by tho Mayor (Mr. J. Nash), borough councillors, and other residents, who warmly congratulated him' on his appointment. In reply' to tho felicitations of the) Mayor and other sneakers, Mr. Mackenzie said that ho believed that New Zealand was entering on a period of severe competition with other producing countries. Now Zealand must, he considered, look abroad for other markets, and must not in tho future -rely entirely on Great Britain. European countries were increasingly inquiring for food supplies. He did hot think that the 'food consumers of Continental countries would bo content much longer with the restrictions that, were at. prosent placed by tho Governments upon . tho importation of produce. In conclusion, Mr. Mackenzie said that the good fellowship, which had been expressed everywhere over his appointment to tho important position of High Commisoioner for the Dominion wonld act as a stimulus to him to put forth his best, efforts on behalf of New Zealand in the Old World.
