COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS RETIRING.

FORTY YEARS' SERVICE. , Tho Minister for Marino (tho Hon. F, M. B. Fisher) received yesterday and noccptod with regret the resignation of Mr, C. S. Nixon, Collector of Customs at 'Wellington. Mr. Nixon has been compelled to retiro on tho ground of ill-health after 40 years of service, liie resignation takes effect from December 1 next. Mr. Nixon joined t'lie Customs service on July 1, 1872, anil at tho beginning of last month completed 40 years' servico with the Department. He joined at Wcst)iort, when ho was seventeen years of ago, having passed the Junior and Senior Civil Service Examination, after leaving Wanganui C>ll! gc. whore he was educated.' Now regulations having come in, the examination p'Mvcd to lie a very strenuous one, and only seven boys passed out of eighty-seven. Mr. Nixon's eldest brother passed at tho head of the list and Mr. Nixon himself came seoond. After re< maining eighteen mouths at Westport Mr. Nixon was transferred to Greymouth where ho remained for fivo and a half years. From Greymouth ho went to Invercargill, where he remained for four and a half yeurs. Ho was next transfer- 1 red as landing waiter to Wellington where ho was stationed for the next eight years. From Wellington Mr. Nixon went to Lytteltoji as landing waiter and tida survoyor. Having spent three years at Lyttolton he was transferred bo New Plymouth as Collector. Subsequently Mr. Nixon served for 6ix years as landing surveyor in Dunedin, and an equal period at Timaru as Collector. His next station was Napier, where he served as 'Collector for eighteen months. At tho end of that period he was appointed Collector at Wellington, Two years later ho was appointed Inspector to tho Department and ho has been Collector of Customs at'.Wellington and Inspector of Customs for tho Dominion up to tho timo of his retirement. No offioial announcement has yet been made as to tho filling of tho vacancy oreated by Mr. Nixon's resignation, but Mr. E. R. Barbazon (Collector at Dunedin) is looked upon as a possible successor.
