•AN ANTARCTIC VISITOR. People who have boon long resident in the Old Country know what it is to "smell snow" in tho a ; ir. It was so. From tlio terraces above tho harbour could be seen a heavy grey full of snow clouds which drove along tho crests of the hills on tho eastern side of tho harbour. When tliisbank had cleared tho summits of tho' hills stood out white and glistenin?, all the high lands in and around Wellington received their mantlo of fleeco, and passengers by tho early morning ferry steamerf from tho bays across tho water could see the snow lying on tho hills bdhind Northland, and along tfhe TinaWi Hills. It is some years since the 6now of an Antarctic gale draped the Wellington hills, and tlio appearance of the heights yesterday morning is an indication of the unusual ..severity of tho weather at this , time of the year. The Government Meteorologist forecasts cold . and changeable : weather, with showers along the East ! Coast, and very cold nights inland. Tlio ' barometer has an upward tendency, but ' uncertain in the North Island.
