PROPOSED AMENDMENTS. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Auckland, August 12. The abolition of private bars, and six o'clock closing on Saturdays, wore measures, advocated at a meeting lield to-night ' Tho Hon. G.-Fowlds presided,' and with him wero tho Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley), tho Revs. C. H. Garland, 1. Jolly, Knowlos, Ivempton,, and others. Bishop Crossley moved s "That thi6 meeting requests tho Minister to legislate during tliia session of Parliament— "(1) To booui'o non-omploymeut of unregistered barmaids. "(2) To abolish private bars. "(3) To so legislate that intoxicating liquor shall not bo supplied in private rooinß to any customer save bona-fido lodgers. "(4) That public bar shall mean one room only opening immediately to the street, and that the said bar shall not be obscured, but shall bo visible from the street." 1 The Rev. C. H. Garland seconded the motion, which was carried, with one dissentient. Tho Hev. I. Jolly then moved:—"(a) Tlmt this meeting requests tho Primo Minister to secure the necessary amendment of the Licensing Act as will provide for tho closing of liquor bars on all lirtused premises at 6 p.m. on Saturday evenings, (b) That in the event of Parliament making provision for a general Saturday half-holiday, it should include the bars of all licensed premises." _ ■An amendment—"That in tho opinion of this meeting all bars should close at 6 p.m. on five nights in tho week and on Saturday afternoon; also that they should observe all holidays as other retail businesses with the exception of fruiterers"— was lost, and tho/resolution was carried.
