THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
1 CONCESSIONS ON THE EVE OP ELECTIONS. The Thorndon branch of tho Amalgamated Society of Koil\vay Servants is not in sympathy with the suggestion that the various branches should pass resolutions of protest against tho proposed action of tho Government to appoint a General Manager for Railways from abroad. In connection with this matter, the following resolution was carried at a recent meeting:—"That it is not part of (he functions of tho A.S.R.S. to interfere in matters of this, nature." Opinions were expressed to the effect that so far as the members' conditions are concerned, tho system of granting concessions on the ove of general elections lias left its mark in tho shape of glaring anomalies. If a moro settled state of affairs was instituted, it would bo infinitely preferable to what has prevailed in the past, and would result in a considerable saving in the eocioty's finances.
