CONDITIONS OF WORK.
1 . AN INQUIRY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 8. The Hon. W. Eraser, Minister for Public Works, telegraphed, in reply to tho secretary of the General Labourers' union, who asked as to the date of the inquiry into the conditions of work at the Lake Coleridge hydro-electric works, and if tho union could be represented thereat, as follows:—"The resident engineer has been instructed to make full inquiries on all points complained of. You had better consult him as to date. I have just been advised that there is no obligation on a. contractor to employ a certificated enginedriver to lower men down the shaft as a tunnel is not a mine, but a quarry ™j m t)>o provisions of the Stone Quarries Act. Ihe resident engineer at Christchurch will doubtlessly report on this point also."
