COL ROBIN ABROAD.

NOTES FEOM CANADA. Colonel A. W. Robin, C.M.G., late Ad-jutant-General of the New Zealand Forces, who was appointed to represent the Dominion on tuo Imperial General Staff in London arrived at llonie towards the end of June. In the- coursu of a chatty letter to an old and intimate friend in Wellington (written while eu route across Canada), Colonel Robin said;—" Hero lam in Ottawa, just having arrived at 5.30 tun. Il is ruining hero—just liko Wellington! Have had a very good time, having met so many who have extended the 'glad hand , to me. Whilst at Vancouver on May 24 a big shooting match was held on tho range there. 'I was present at the earnest desire of some of the officers. They use the Ross rifle, which," is different to ours. It has an entirely different style of sighfc—a peephole mid a barley-corn fine sight, also en- v closed in a circle of metal. Tho Ross has a double pull. Colonel Lcclrio and Major Sclaler (who are going with them to Bislcy this year), and Captain Miller insisted that, I should try their rifle. With considerable hesitancy fit is a long timo since I did any shooting), I agreed, and am glad for Now Zealand's sake that I kept the target all the time at 200 yds., 500 yds., pud GOO yds. Only twice did I get a mngpio, and got bulls at tho longer ranges, time keeping up my average, and without tho use of tho sling. They all ' use tho twisted sling, and declared they could not shoot without it. They expressed some surprise that anyone could shoot decently without it. Result lam invited to bo a 'Canadian' at their pavilion at Bisley. I took a, rough sketch and details of tho range, which I will send to New Zealand. It may be U6eful at Trcntham as the range is a 'fish-tail' one, end peculiarly flagged. The officers named above and tlieiv men did strenuous work together in South Africa, and . were toeethor in many o tiiht corner."
