MAGNIFICENT PUBLIC OFFICE. Tho now General Post Office in Feather-' ston Street will probably Iμ ready for occupation either towards the end of August or early in September. The new edifico provides splendid. accommodation, for all departments. The new Post Office will bring together tho many scattered. departments which (leal directly with tho public. If a stranger in Wellington receives a money-order he naturally goes to tho Post Office, where ho lias to bo directed to—"First turn to the right along Grey Street, then turn to tho left into Featherstou Street, and straight ahead on Lambton Quay you'll find tho Money Order Office." This direction is absolutely correct, but one can eeo how confusing it is to the stranger. In tho new structure all the post office, telegraphic, money order, Savings Bank business will be conveniently grouped on tho ground floor, within hail of one another. _ Tho public apartment for the transaction ofpost office and telegraphic business EC-ts a' . new standard in,office fittings and decoration for New Zealand. From the main entrance the huge apartment extends to the back wall of tho building, and curving gently right round the room in elliptical form is a counter, topped with polished hardwood, and handsomely faced with white Carrara marble, panelled in rod and dadoed with grey mottled marble. The effect of tho marble counter rising from tho tilo floor will bo very fino. The . appearance of the chamber will bo still further enhanced by the lxsautiful donm lights in the roof—one huge central dome and seven smaller ones on each sideeach glazed with lead-light glass, most, artistically designed. Tho_ space behind . tho counter will bo partitioned off into numerous small offices, each with its own particular work to perform. All these partitions are glazed in 'Viennese glass. The Money Order and Saving Bank Oifico leads off tho mnin portico immediately to the left. Tho appointments are the same as those.of the main office.; Additional room is provided in the privatcbox office, and thoush there may be com- ■ plaints as to the size of the boxes, they will at least be all together, which should assist the officers in tho work of speedy distribution.
