'. .RETURNS NOT'REMUNERATIVE. ] ; The Department of Agriculture, New ', South Wales, has supplied sonic interesting figures in connection with the recent shipment.of apples grown at the Bathurst ..'. Experiment Farm and forwarded to Lou- J dun. The shipment consisted of 500 cases, ' of which 491 were sold,-made up of the ' "; following ■ .'varieties:—Cleopatra,, Munro 1 Favourite, Rome Beauty, Granny Smith, ' and Five-crown Tippin. The gross prices J realised ranged from 7s. to 9s. Gd. a case, t and the net returns in London were'Jl77 l 1 7s. 7d. Against, this, however, the follow- i t [• -ing expenses were incurred at this'end:— ! It will thus be seen that the actual net s return. for these 404 cases was only ,£9B J • : 18s. : 5(1.,'-which, allowing for the. cost-of , ?' the eases themselves, gives a net return [ [ of 3s. lid. per ease. These 'figures, the Department states, j * should be of • special interest to , apple- ' growers, as. they : show. that there is an- j I other side to the picture usually present- " ed by optimistic owners .of apple or- ' chants. The net return is only about half ( ' the local value of similar fruit at.time < I' of dispatch,'or at time .of sale, and is not f remunerative under present conditions.\ s l '•'■ '_
