CEMENT CARGO TROUBLE.
WATERSIDE CONFERENCE CONDEMNS LATEST DEMAND.
(By Tetecraph.-Sneckl Correspondent.! Wanganui, July 27. The recent demand by certain watonu'do workers (hat couiont and manures shall bo imported in zinc or iron-lined casks is by no means generally supported by tho unions, and importers who have been perturbed by it can, if tho worst conies to tho worst, still remain untroubled if they avrango to import through those ports where the waterside workers have held aloof from the Federation of Labour and remained loyal to their own organisation. Such at least is tho impression to be gathered from the followir.s rcsojution, carried unanimously at. tho New Zealand Waterside Federation Conference to-dav:—"That this eonferenco condemns the a'ttitudo of the Federation of Labour in making it appear to the public Hint all waterside workers in the Dominion nr-a agreeable to tho enforcement of ziu* lining for cement casks, etc., which *ro being imported, into ll'.e Dominion, .and wishes to point out that the unions aliiliatcd to tho Federation of Waterside Workers do not wish to cause unnecessary (.rouble by being involved in this question." Speaking to your correspondent on this matter, a delegate said tho men certainly desired some consideration, and wisln/d importers to take reasonable steps to ensure that disagreeable Roods were imported in packages that would not cause discomfort to the men handling them, ■'lint this zi.uc-lined business," ho said, "is unreasonable, and if wo want a fair tliin-r for ourselves wo must not impose unfairness on others."
